Nikon celebrates National Fossil Day USA 2020

To celebrate National Fossil Day USA 2020, Dr. Andrew Mathers (X-ray CT Applications Engineer) scanned two fossil shark’s teeth and a modern day shark’s tooth to reveal their internal structure. National Fossil Day is hosted annually by the National Park Service and the American Geosciences Institute, on the Wednesday of Earth Science Week, in October. CT scan – The symmetry of starfish

See the structure of a starfish visualized with X-ray CT. The mesmerizing X-ray CT scan of a Starfish (seen below) was acquired by Dr. Andrew Mathers using a Nikon XT H 225 ST.     This X-ray CT scan of a Starfish was acquired by Dr. Andrew Mathers at 50 µm voxel resolution and 37 Watts, using a Nikon XT H 225 ST. The XT H 225 ST system houses a Nikon 225 kV microfocus X-ray source fitted with a tungsten reflection target and a 1 mm Copper beam filter, coupled with a Varex 4343CT flat panel detector. ModelMaker H120 enables precision repair of used mould tools

ModelMaker H120 is used to scan the used mould and compare to original 3D design data.

Nikon Metrology’s ModelMaker H120 can be adopted for defect detection in used mould tools. High accuracy laser scanned data is compared to the original 3D design data before re-machining and restoring the mould to the same quality as a new part. Okuma is trying to close the production chain when it comes to used and worn out moulds. These worn and used moulds no longer represent the original part, the complex shapes are poorly defined and the tool becomes unreliable.
